The Mysteries of Udolpho

by

Ann Radcliffe

A young woman, born to a poor but noble family, loses first her mother and then her father. She becomes the ward of her greedy aunt who marries an Italian nobleman for the money. Her father's estate executor sells her family home. Meanwhile, her new uncle promises her hand in marriage to a vile count in order to seal an alliance. She is whisked away to Castle Udolpho in Tuscany, never again to see the young chevalier she loves. [And this is just the first volume...]

Ann Radcliffe invented the Gothic Romance. The Mysteries of Udolpho, this massive (300,000 words) novel, is the one Jane Austen lampooned in Northanger Abbey. It is presented here in four volumes.
